This app is pretty amazing
I have no idea how it tracks REM as well as it does, but it really is excellent. Kudos.

Lucid dreams are awesome.
Unfortunately, only less than 0.01% of the population experienced a lucid dream.
DreamZ can help you join this elite group of lucid dreamers.
Although DreamZ uses some of the most advanced scientific algorithms in sleep analysis, using it is incredibly simple. To start having lucid dreams, press "Go to sleep".

The way DreamZ works is by using special "Triggers" (or cues) that will be played only when you enter a dream.
Researches show that triggers we experience in the real world while we are inside an REM sleep stage, tend to interweave inside our dream without waking us up – giving us the momentarily awareness we need to perform a reality check and understand that we are dreaming.
You can use two types of dream triggers - audio triggers, and light\color triggers. Choose one to continue.

The audio cue is one of the most important aspects of the app's operation. It's important to choose the right audio cue to maximize the probability that you will hear it in your dream, and recognize it.
DreamZ is featuring more than 50 audio cues specially designed to blend into your dream without waking you up.
You can also choose songs from your iPod library, and even record your own audio messages.
Read more about selecting the optimal audio trigger.

Our newest feature is the special "Light dream triggers". Choosing a light trigger will play a series of flickering lights and colors whenever you enter a dream.
Together with the audio trigger they highly increase your chance of getting lucid.
After choosing your optimal dream triggers, continue by pressing "Set"

Since DreamZ is also a biological sleep alarm clock, we can offer 3 unique wake up modes:
Alarm Mode - The alarm will be played exactly at the set time
Memory Mode - The alarm will be played within a 30 minute window before the set alarm. It will wake you up as soon as your last dream ends. This will greatly improve the probability to remember that dream
Fresh Mode - The alarm will be played within a 30 minute window before the set alarm. It will wake you up when you are in the lightest sleep stage, so you will feel more fresh and vital when you wake up. Use this wakeup mode if you want a good night's sleep

Place the phone under the sheets, facing down. Make sure the phone is connected to a power source, and go to sleep. DreamZ will analyze your body movement during the night to build a graph of your various sleep phases. Whenever you will enter a dream (REM phase), DreamZ will play the dream trigger that you selected - allowing you to enjoy lucid dreaming.

As soon as you wake up, DreamZ will present you with a place to write down your dreams in a dream journal. Writing down your dreams as soon as you wake up is the best way to remember them. You can even record yourself talking instead of wasting time typing.

Watch all your sleep history and analyzed statistics in one place. See a summary description of your dream periods, or watch a full graph of your sleep cycles. Use this info to improve your sleep and ability to dream.

If you must sleep through a third of your life, why should you sleep through your dreams, too?
Stephen LaBerge
Ordinarily, we experience our dreams as if they are reality, and it’s only after we are awaken that we recognize them as dreams. However, sometimes we are explicitly conscious of the fact that we are dreaming, and this phenomenon is termed lucid dreaming. The definition of the term is simply dreaming while knowing you’re doing so, and having a degree of control while dreaming.
Lucid dreaming is the conscious stirring inside an unconscious dream world, the most significant part of it is that the dream is perceived as reality. However, lucid dreams are more vivid and tangible than real life itself, as if it puts everything in focus. Each of us dreams every night, therefore in theory, each holds the capacity of learning to dream lucidly.
How many of us have the opportunity to taste even a hint of our fantasies and dreams? Lucidity offers an access to wondrous worlds, richly detailed and impressive as reality itself, if not enhanced. In your lucid dream state you can rehearse real life events and encounters, re-live childhood memories, find solutions for critical questions and salve real life problems and dilemmas.
These worlds we create are so convincingly real to such an extent that we can hardly tell them apart from waking life. Once we become lucid we have total freedom, the possibilities of the virtual dream world are limitless, and not only does it benefit you while dreaming, it also makes you become more self aware in your daily life through meditation.
The first and most basic gateway to lucid dreaming is remembering your dreams. It happens quite often that we wake up feeling as if we haven’t dreamt during our sleep at all, or even if we know we have, we can’t remember the slightest bit from its content and it seems just like a big foggy cloud of delirium. The main reason for this is undeveloped recall. For some people remembering dreams comes naturally, and for others it takes more training, just like many other things in life.
The best way to remember your dreams is to keep a pen and journal by your bed and a small light lamp. The idea is that you don’t have obstacles on your way that prevent you from writing your dreams immediately upon waking from them. DreamZ simply this by allowing you to write down your memories inside the app as soon as you wake up. You can also simply record yourself talking about the dream to speed things up.
DreamZ was founded in 2011 by Adam Siton and Einat Volach. Having his first lucid dream only a few years ago, Adam got fascinated with the idea of controlling his dreams. After learning about the subject he realized that there are a lot of ways to practice lucid dreaming - and that he's not good at any of them.
So he decided to use what he's best of, technology, to help regular people become lucid dreamers.
Einat and Adam decided to build the most efficient, simple and cheap way to become lucid, and with the help of the talented designer Adi Abramovich - they created DreamZ.
DreamZ monitors your sleep patterns and recognize your biological sleep cycles, separating light sleep, deep sleep and REM sleep - the phase in your sleep in which dreams occur.
DreamZ has more than 50 audio "cues" specially optimized to blend into your dreams without waking you up - allowing you to become lucid.
A new feature - Choose a light trigger that will play a series of flashing lights and colors when you enter a dream. It's a whole new way of lucid dreaming.
Experiment with audio dream trigger by recording your very own "message" to your self. Hearing your own voice in a dream is one of the best ways to become lucid
Write down your dreams in a special journal AS SOON AS you wake up. This is the best way to remember your dreams. You can even record yourself instead of wasting time typing.
Watch details statistics and graph display of your sleep cycles during the night - analyze and improve your sleep and dreaming.

DreamZ support the following devices:
* iPhone - all models
* iPad - all models
* iPod - Only iPod touch 4G and above
DreamZ also requires a iOS 5 or higher
DreamZ is able to identify the specific sleep stage you are in by using a method called Actigraphy .Actigraphy is a non-invasive method of monitoring human sleep cycles. It is based on the fact that we move slightly different during each of the sleep phases during the night. DreamZ records you body movement and calculate the exact stage you are in at any second. Therefore it can detect your REM stage and play the audio cue on time.
A flat line graph means that no activity data was collected. The most common cause for this is locking the iPhone's screen, or moving the app to the background. Make sure you do not move the app to the background, and do not lock the screen when you go to sleep.
Keeping the iPhone connected to the charger is not mandatory but highly recommended. DreamZ usually takes up about 30% of the devices battery during a common night, but this number can vary on different devices. You can try running DreamZ without a charger connected, but we recommend that on the first try you will have a different alarm clock as a backup, in case the phone's battery runs out during the night
The short answer is yes. DreamZ learning algorithm uses the first two nights to calibrate the app. It is able to detect that two people sleep in the same bed, and filter out the other person's movements. However, there are some scenarios, mainly on very soft mattresses, or in cases where one of the partners weight considerably more than the other, that the algorithm can't separate the movements. We are constantly working on improving the learning algorithm, so these scenarios are very rare
Since the iPhone is located very close to your ears, you hear the audio cue in a much higher volume than your partner. Unless your partner is an extremely light sleeper, the audio cue should not bother him more than light snoring does.
For most of the cases, DreamZ will be accurate at first attempt. In some cases, you will need to adjust it to your specific conditions. It has many reasons, like the kind of the mattress, the position you place the device and more. If this is the case try use the calibration feature in the settings, and try not to mess with it too much so it won’t get mixed signals. If you think DreamZ’s performances of the sleep graph are still not accurate, use the app for a few nights without the dream sound, so it will have enough information about your sleep and get more accurate.
Basically, the audio cue is played each time you enter an REM stage, so you can see how many times the audio cue was played in the history tab - just look at the number of dreams you had. You can also see at what hours the audio cue was played using the detailed graph.
This means that the audio cue is not optimized - The purpose of the audio cue is not to wake you up completely but to "blend" into your dream. Some sounds however tend to wake us up immediately, even in a very low volume (i.e. hearing your name being called). Maybe the audio cue you are using is causing you to wake up immediately. The volume of the dream audio cue is indeed one of the major issues, since it depends a lot on how deep the user sleeps.
DreamZ algorithm is based on the typical sleep behavior, that fits the majority of the population. Some people simply have a very different sleep behavior that messes up our calculations. We are constantly working on improving our algorithm to handle various sleep behaviors, but it's a very long process.
Both the dream audio cue and the alarm sounds are played when the phone is in silent mode, so you can use the app freely.
It's ok that you haven't had a lucid dream yet - these things take a little time, and it is very individual. There are some of us that can have multiple lucid dreams a night, and some that have never experienced it. If you want to improve your chances of having a lucid dream, start practicing reality checks (you can find information on our site) and keep writing your dreams in the dream log. It is common to say that these actions will eventually train your mind into lucidity and dream recall. We hope that you will have one very soon.
